The Local Government Division has directed district administrators (DCs) to allocate necessary khas land for constructing dump yards in the 330 municipalities that currently lack dumping stations. This directive aims to improve waste management in these areas. The instruction was issued in a recent letter from the Local Government Division, signed by Undersecretary Dr. Ashfiqun Nahar, and sent to all district administrators.
Integrated Action Plan for Pollution-Free Waste Management
The directive follows a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on June 7, where an integrated action plan was formulated to ensure a balanced environment and pollution-free waste management. In a subsequent meeting on June 11, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, it was decided that khas land in less populated areas near cities would be allocated for waste management in municipalities without dumping stations.
Procedure for Land Allocation
The instructions specify that suitable khas land should be identified and initially provided to municipalities through annual settlement. Subsequently, after completing necessary legal procedures, the land should be permanently allocated. Additionally, the land can be temporarily used for waste dumping until the permanent allocation is finalized.
Urgent Action Required
The Local Government Division has urged district administrators to take immediate action and submit a progress report to the ministry within the next 15 working days.
