Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested five individuals suspected of being part of an organized gang that lured victims into honey trap schemes, recorded compromising videos, and extorted money through blackmail. The arrests were made following a series of coordinated raids in Sabujbagh, Badda, and Khilgaon between July 3 and July 4.

Modus Operandi and Victim Profile

According to Md. Tariqul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP's DB Cyber & Special Crime (South) Division, the gang targeted a loan officer of a private financial institution. A woman posing as a loan applicant lured the victim to a flat in Khilgaon, where he was allegedly assaulted, filmed in a compromising situation, and forced to hand over cash, bank cards, and other valuables.

The victim was extorted of Tk 110,000 through mobile financial services and threatened with the release of the compromising video on social media unless an additional Tk 300,000 was paid. The victim filed a case with Khilgaon Police Station on June 22.

Evidence and Ongoing Investigation

During the raids, police recovered nine mobile phones, one walkie-talkie, and Tk 4,000 in cash. Tariqul Islam stated that investigators found evidence on the seized digital devices suggesting the group used the same modus operandi to target multiple victims.

Efforts are currently underway to identify additional victims and other members of the criminal network. The arrested suspects are on police remand, and the investigation is ongoing.

Significance and Implications

This arrest highlights the growing concern over organized cybercrime in Bangladesh. Honey trap schemes not only victimize individuals but also undermine trust in financial institutions and digital platforms. The swift action by the DMP demonstrates a commitment to combating such criminal activities and protecting citizens.

As the investigation continues, it is expected that more details will emerge about the gang's operations and the extent of their criminal network. This case serves as a reminder for individuals to remain vigilant against such scams and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
