Ali Hossain, a prominent leader of the Mujib Bahini in greater Jessore during the Liberation War, passed away at the age of 81. He died while receiving treatment at Jessore General Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Friday morning around 6:30 AM.
Family sources reported that Hossain fell ill at his residence in the Railbazar area of Jessore city on May 12. He was initially admitted to the Coronary Care Unit of Jessore General Hospital. Two days later, he was transferred to a private hospital in the capital for advanced treatment. After showing some improvement, he was brought back to Jessore but fell ill again and was readmitted to Jessore General Hospital last Monday.
Rabiul Alam, deputy leader of the Mujib Bahini in greater Jessore, stated that Hossain was not just a freedom fighter but also a witness to a significant period in history. His death has cast a shadow of grief among fellow freedom fighters.
Family members informed that Hossain's wife and only son, Rajen Ali, had passed away earlier. His only daughter, Farzana Ali, who resides in Canada, had come to the country to take care of her father's treatment. His funeral will be held after Asr prayers at Jessore Central Eidgah Maidan, followed by burial at the family graveyard in Kazipur village, Sadar Upazila.
After his death, Hossain's body was taken to his residence, where leaders and workers from various political, social, and professional organizations expressed their condolences to the bereaved family.
According to sources from the Liberation War and local freedom fighters, Hossain was the vice-president of the then Central Chhatra League in the 1960s. He played an active role in the Six Point Movement and the 1969 mass uprising. In the early days of the Liberation War, he went to India for training in Dehradun and later participated in the war in the greater Jessore region.
After independence, Hossain played a role in the establishment of JaSad and served as the president of the district JaSad. Following the party split, he became the district president of JaSad (Inu). When JaSad reunified in 1997, he became involved in Awami League politics. Although he did not hold any party position, he actively campaigned for the Awami League in various elections.
Hossain was born on January 17, 1945, in Kazipur village, Ramnagar Union, Jessore Sadar Upazila. He completed his SSC from Jessore Muslim Academy, HSC from Government Michael Madhusudan College, and obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees from Rajshahi University.
