In the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month, the death toll has climbed to 5,278, according to the latest official figures released on Monday. The twin quakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck the north of the country, with the coastal state of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas, bearing the brunt of the destruction.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced the grim update on Telegram, stating that the number of reported injured remains at 16,740. The earthquakes have left more than 850 buildings damaged and 190 completely collapsed.

The government has not provided an estimate for the number of people still missing. However, more than 23,500 displaced individuals are currently living in makeshift camps, ranging from stadiums to public squares, where volunteers are providing essential medical services and distributing provisions.

The June 24 earthquakes have had a profound impact on the region, with ongoing rescue and relief efforts underway. The disaster has highlighted the vulnerabilities of the region's infrastructure and the urgent need for improved emergency preparedness and response mechanisms.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath, the focus remains on supporting the affected communities and ensuring that those displaced receive the necessary aid and assistance to begin the long road to recovery.
