United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the immediate removal of all sanctions imposed on Syria during the era of ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad. Speaking at a press conference in Damascus, Guterres emphasized the need for the international community to support Syria's economic recovery and reconstruction efforts. 'I welcome steps that have eased sanctions, and opening new possibilities for economic recovery, but all these sanctions must be removed immediately,' Guterres said. Syria's new authorities, who took power in December 2024, are focused on rebuilding the economy and infrastructure after more than 13 years of war. The World Bank estimates that post-war reconstruction could cost $216 billion. Despite some Western countries, including the United States, beginning to lift economic sanctions, investors remain cautious. Guterres highlighted the United Nations' commitment to supporting the Syrian people and government during this critical period. 'Syria today is at a crossroads,' he noted, stressing the need for investment in people, the economy, and institutions. He also called for support to restore essential services, rebuild infrastructure, revive livelihoods, and facilitate the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced people.
