Protests and Political Crisis
Fedorov's dismissal by Zelensky last week caused significant political unrest in Kyiv. Thousands of protesters, particularly young people, took to the streets demanding his reinstatement. The firing also resulted in the removal of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky, replaced by Mykhailo Drapaty, an ally of Fedorov.
Fedorov's Reform Agenda
Appointed in January with a mandate to modernize and digitize the Ukrainian military, Fedorov faced resistance from the army command. He criticized the military's Soviet-style approach and sought to address issues such as corruption, equipment shortages, and an unpopular mobilization drive.
Zelensky's Stance
Despite the protests and Fedorov's demands, Zelensky has appointed a new acting defence minister and refuses to reinstate Fedorov. The political crisis continues as Fedorov remains steadfast in his demand for his old role.
