Spain has declared a national emergency in the Madrid region and Avila province due to uncontrolled wildfires, prompting swift deployment of resources and evacuations. The interior ministry announced the measure to expedite firefighting efforts, placing the crisis response under a military emergency unit.
Evacuations and Fire Spread
Over 10,000 people have been evacuated across the Madrid region as several forest fires burn simultaneously. Authorities sent evacuation messages to 3,500 people in Aldea de Fresno, approximately 60 kilometers from Madrid. The fire in Avila is spreading rapidly, leading to stay-at-home orders for residents in Burgohondo, El Tiemblo, and Navaluenga.
Situation Overview
The largest fire is in Guadalajara, about 100 kilometers north of Madrid, having devastated 32,000 hectares since last Thursday. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez assured that all available resources are being deployed to combat the fires, urging the public to exercise caution and follow instructions from authorities.
Yearly Fire Statistics
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), almost 125,000 hectares have burned in Spain this year, compared to 393,000 hectares for the whole of last year.
