Andy Robertson will honor his late friend and teammate, Diogo Jota, by carrying his memory into the World Cup. The Scottish defender, who will lead Scotland in the tournament, has vowed to play not just for himself but for both of them, inspired by a heartfelt letter from Jota's widow, Rute Cardoso. Jota, a Portuguese star for Liverpool, tragically passed away in a car accident on July 3 last year.
In a letter published by FIFA's 'Letters That Unite' initiative, Rute reminded Robertson of the deep bond and shared dreams they had, urging him to carry Jota's spirit with him. Robertson, deeply moved by the letter, declared that he will play with Jota's memory as his companion throughout the tournament.
Scotland's World Cup campaign begins on June 14 against Haiti, with their other group opponents being Haiti and Morocco. This marks Scotland's return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence.
