Advocate S.M. Shafikul Alam Mona, Chairman of the Khulna Development Authority (KDA), highlighted the crucial role of sports in protecting young people from drugs, juvenile gangs, and other social crimes. Speaking at the final of the Zia Memorial Mini-Bar Football Tournament in Khulna, Mona stressed that sports are more than just recreation; they instill discipline, unity, and teamwork. 'Football, for instance, teaches leadership, quick decision-making, loyalty, and mutual respect,' he explained.
The tournament, organized by Young Star Boys Club, brought together 32 teams, showcasing the vibrant sports culture in Khulna. Mona pointed out that regular participation in sports activities keeps young people disciplined, physically fit, and mentally healthy, especially in an era where screen time is increasing. He added that the KDA is dedicated to not only urban infrastructure but also to fostering a healthy environment with adequate playgrounds and a vibrant city for the younger generation.
Mona's advocacy for sports reflects a broader commitment to community well-being. He believes that by providing opportunities for physical activity, the city can reduce the risk of youth involvement in negative activities. 'By promoting sports, we are creating a healthier and safer community,' he said. The event also saw the presence of several local leaders and community members, underscoring the importance of sports in Khulna's community life.
The KDA Chairman's speech comes at a time when concerns about youth engagement in sports are growing. With many young people spending more time indoors, the push for outdoor activities and sports is more critical than ever. Mona's remarks aim to encourage more participation in sports to ensure a balanced and healthy lifestyle for the city's youth.
Following the event, Mona participated in a prayer gathering at Mariam Jame Mosque and inspected the construction of Sritalabari Temple, further demonstrating his involvement in community development. His dedication to both urban infrastructure and community welfare highlights the KDA's comprehensive approach to city development.
