George Lucas, the legendary creator of the 'Star Wars' saga, has unveiled his long-awaited Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. This ambitious project, nearly two decades in the making, faced numerous obstacles but finally opened its doors to the public. The museum, built on a former parking lot next to the University of Southern California, Lucas's alma mater, features over 9,300 square meters of exhibition space showcasing works by renowned artists, illustrators, and comic creators.
A Vision Realized
Lucas described the complex, built with his wife and business partner Mellody Hobson, as the 'people's temple of art.' He emphasized his fascination with doing the impossible, stating, 'I'm used to doing the impossible. This one almost broke my will.' The museum's futuristic design, with a green roof that blends into the surrounding landscape, aims to spark visitors' curiosity and offer a glimpse of the future.
A Celebration of Narrative Art
The museum houses more than 30 galleries featuring works by artists such as Banksy, Frida Kahlo, and Jacob Lawrence, alongside comics by Winsor McCay and Jack Kirby, and illustrations by Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth. Lucas highlighted the power of narrative art, stating, 'A picture is very powerful, and the stories are very powerful, and you combine them together, and those two elements create a society.'
At the entrance, visitors are greeted by the iconic yellow Naboo N-1 starfighter from 'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.' However, the museum's offerings extend far beyond the Star Wars universe, aiming to illustrate stories that resonate across different mediums and eras. Executive director Tracey Bates explained, 'Narrative art is stories that are illustrated. A story that you can see a picture in one frame, and it doesn't need further explanation.'
The museum's architect, Ma Yansong, described the design as meant to evoke curiosity, with visitors often comparing it to a spaceship or a cloud. Yansong said, 'We want to make architecture look futuristic and make people curious. What is it? Some people say this is a spaceship. Some people say this is a cloud, but that makes people curious. What's in there? They want to discover on their own.'
