The Acting Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS), Barrister Kayser Kamal, has emphasized that the expectations of the people from the current parliament are exceptionally high. He stated that the '36 crore eyes' of the country’s 18 crore people are fixed on its activities. Describing the present legislature as the 'parliament of the oppressed', he noted that the overwhelming majority of lawmakers have faced severe hardships such as execution threats, enforced disappearances, secret detention, imprisonment, persecution, or exile.
Public Expectations and Parliamentary Role
In an exclusive interview with the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Kayser Kamal said, 'The people expect elected lawmakers to fulfil their aspirations through thoughtful debates, constructive criticism and reasoned decision-making.' He believes that around 99 percent of the 350 lawmakers have experienced one or more forms of oppression, making this parliament unique not only in Bangladesh but also globally.
Kamal highlighted that people from all walks of life, including farmers, workers, and ordinary citizens, now closely follow parliamentary proceedings through mobile phones. He stressed the importance of lawmakers meeting the nation's aspirations through meaningful debates and logical deliberations.
Commitment to Neutrality and Democratic Values
As the Acting Speaker, Kayser Kamal emphasized his commitment to conducting parliamentary business with complete neutrality and fairness. He stated, 'Justice and impartiality are my foremost principles. As long as I have the opportunity to preside over the parliament, I will remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of neutrality and fairness.'
He also stressed the need for both the government and the opposition to play responsible roles in institutionalizing democracy. Referring to Bangladesh’s political history, he noted the sacrifices made during the Liberation War and subsequent political developments that have shaped the nation’s democratic journey.
Kamal described Parliament as the centre of the country’s governance, emphasizing that while laws are enacted by the legislature, implemented by the executive, and interpreted by the judiciary, the legislative institution remains at the heart of the state. He believes the Jatiya Sangsad should be the centre point of Bangladesh’s overall development and democratic practices.
