Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has accused Argentina of cheating his team out of a place in the World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic late comeback saw the defending champions win 3-2 on Tuesday. Hassan claimed his side suffered injustice and unfair treatment throughout the match.
VAR and Penalty Controversies
The Pharaohs had a goal by Mostafa Zico ruled out when they were leading 1-0, with VAR intervening to spot a foul on Lisandro Martinez much earlier in the move. Zico did score a second goal, putting Egypt on the brink of a place in the last eight for the first time.
However, Argentina hit back with goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi, who equalized with his eighth goal of the tournament. The controversy continued as Egypt believed they should have been awarded a penalty for a pull by Alexis Mac Allister on Hamdy Fathy in the build-up to Argentina's winner scored by Enzo Fernandez.
Hassan's Explosive Press Conference
In an explosive press conference, Hassan said: "I do not want to put it nicely and talk about hard luck. We have been cheated unfairly today, we have suffered injustice." He added: "We haven't seen respect or fair play. There has not been respect or fair play."
Hassan also speculated that the officials had been put under pressure to keep Argentina, and particularly Messi, in the competition. "Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champions in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running," he told BeIn Sports.
Scheduling Complaints
Hassan further complained about the scheduling of the match for a noon kick-off, just four days after both sides had won their round of 32 matches. "Whoever schedules those matches has never played football. You never schedule a game for 12pm," he said.
Significance for Bangladesh
This controversy highlights the intense scrutiny and pressure on officiating in high-stakes matches. For Bangladesh, it underscores the importance of fair play and the impact of external factors on the outcome of major sporting events.
