Bhai Phota, also known as Bhatri Dwitiya, is a festival celebrated to honor the bond between brothers and sisters. Rooted in ancient mythology, the festival is observed on the second day after Kali Puja, during the Kartik month. Sisters perform rituals to wish for their brothers' long and prosperous lives.
The festival is based on the mythological story of Yama and Yamuna, the children of Surya and Sangya. Despite being separated, their love and bond remained strong. On this day, sisters apply 'tilak' on their brothers' foreheads using their left little finger, symbolizing the infinite love between siblings.
The rituals involve applying a mixture of sandalwood paste, ghee, yogurt, or ash from a lamp on the brother's forehead. Sisters chant mantras or rhymes while performing the ritual. Following this, blessings are exchanged, often accompanied by sweets and gifts. Families also organize feasts to celebrate the occasion.
