The holy day of Ashura will be observed in Bangladesh on July 6. The decision was made by the national moon-sighting committee, which confirmed the sighting of the Muharram moon on June 26. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, will begin on June 27, and Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, will thus fall on July 6.
The committee, chaired by AFM Khalid Hossain, met at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and reviewed data from various sources including district administrations, the Islamic Foundation, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, and the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization.
Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was killed in the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram 61 AH. The day is marked by various events, particularly by the Shia community, including Tazia processions.
