In a significant development, Ecuador's Prosecutor's Office has formally charged seven individuals for their alleged involvement in the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in 2023. Villavicencio, a legislator known for his anti-corruption stance, was leading in the polls when he was killed just 11 days before the election.

Among those charged are former Interior Minister Jose Serrano, who is accused of providing information to the Los Lobos gang about Villavicencio's whereabouts, and businessman Xavier Jordan, who allegedly financed and planned the assassination from the United States. Also charged are former legislator Ronny Aleaga, who is believed to have coordinated the murder while in Venezuela, and four members of the Los Lobos gang, including its suspected leader Wilmer Chavarria, also known as 'Pipo'.

Prosecutors allege that Chavarria planned the murder in exchange for $1 million. The operation was executed at a campaign event in Quito, where Villavicencio was shot dead. The suspected gunman was killed by Villavicencio's bodyguards, while six other suspects allegedly linked to the crime were killed in prison.

Villavicencio had reported receiving threats from organized crime groups prior to his death. His assassination sent shockwaves through Ecuador, highlighting the dangers faced by those challenging powerful interests. Five other individuals have already been sentenced in connection with the crime, with some receiving lengthy prison terms.

The charges mark a critical step in Ecuador's efforts to bring justice to Villavicencio's murder, reflecting the nation's commitment to holding those responsible for such heinous acts accountable.
