Former minister Dipu Moni, detained for nearly two years, has been granted bail by the High Court in one murder case. The High Court has also issued a rule in six other cases where Dipu Moni sought bail. The High Court bench, comprising Justice Md. Khayrul Alam and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher, heard seven separate bail applications filed by Dipu Moni. He was granted bail in a murder case filed at Mohammadpur Police Station and a rule was issued in the remaining cases.
Dipu Moni was arrested on August 19, 2024, two weeks after the Awami League was ousted from power. He faces nearly 70 cases, including charges of murder, human rights violations during the July uprising, corruption, and violence. Senior lawyer Ramzan Ali Shikdar represented Dipu Moni in court, along with lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam. Deputy Attorney General Md. Hemayet Ullah represented the state.
Dipu Moni, a joint general secretary of the banned Awami League, has held various ministerial positions including Foreign Minister, Education Minister, and most recently, Social Welfare Minister until the government fell on August 5, 2024.
