At a protest rally held at the National Press Club, speakers demanded that the Chittagong Port not be leased to any foreign entity, emphasizing national security, sovereignty, and economic interests. The rally, organized by the 'Save the Country, Save the Port Movement,' opposed the proposed lease agreement for the port's operation. Various political leaders highlighted the port's significance to Bangladesh's economy and national security.
Shahadat Hossain Selim, a ruling party MP, stated that the current port management has made the institution profitable and there is no need to hand it over to foreigners. He called for the annulment of the lease agreement made by the previous interim government, stressing the need to protect national interests.
Other speakers, including leaders from the Revolutionary Workers Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Socialist Party of Bangladesh, and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, echoed the demand for the cancellation of the lease agreement. They argued that the port's lease to foreigners would compromise national security and economic sovereignty.
The rally also criticized the previous interim government for making agreements that were against the national interest and called for transparent discussions in parliament. The speakers urged the current government to take a firm stance in protecting the nation's interests and sovereignty.
