The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the true scale of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) may be two to four times larger than the official figures indicate. According to the latest DRC data, the outbreak has infected over 1,960 people and resulted in more than 700 deaths since it was detected in mid-May. However, WHO's modelling suggests that the actual number of cases could be substantially higher.

WHO's emergencies director, Chikwe Ihekweazu, stated that the organization's modelling indicates the outbreak is "at least two to four times the number of cases that we have found." This means the actual number of infections could be between 3,920 and 7,840 cases.

The outbreak, centered in the eastern regions of the DRC, has posed significant challenges due to ongoing conflict and the remoteness of affected areas. These factors have complicated efforts to contain the spread of the virus and provide adequate medical care to those affected.

Ebola is a highly contagious and often fatal disease, characterized by symptoms such as fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and unexplained hemorrhage. The virus spreads through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected people and animals.
