DHAKA – The measles crisis in Bangladesh continues to escalate as four more children died from suspected measles in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths from suspected measles to 739 since March 15. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 1,005 new cases of measles and measles-like symptoms, raising the total number of suspected cases to 127,410.
According to the DGHS press release, 870 new suspected measles cases were recorded in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, 135 confirmed measles cases were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 15,874 since March 15. Notably, no deaths from confirmed measles were reported in the past 24 hours, keeping the total number of deaths from confirmed measles at 96 since the outbreak began.
The measles outbreak has been a significant public health concern for Bangladesh, with children being the most vulnerable population. The DGHS has been working tirelessly to control the spread of the disease through vaccination campaigns and public awareness programs.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can lead to severe health complications and death, particularly in young children. The symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles, and the World Health Organization recommends that all children receive two doses of the measles vaccine.
