United International University's (UIU) Mars Rover Team has secured third place in the prestigious University Rover Challenge (URC) held in Utah, USA. The competition, organized by The Mars Society, took place at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) from May 27-30. UIU's team competed against 38 teams from 15 countries. This marks UIU's third consecutive year of participation, having placed 13th in 2022 and 9th in 2023.
The UIU team, led by Saif Al Saad (Team Lead), Mo. Mushfiqur Rahman (Senior Lead), and Sheikh Sakib Hossain (Co-Team Lead), was advised by Professor Hasan Sarwar, Dean of the School of Science and Engineering, and Suman Ahmed, Head of the Computer Science Department. The team's mentor was Lecturer Mo. Abid Hossain from the same department.
This year, UIU's rover was named Orion, symbolizing a 'new dawn' or new beginning. The team completely redesigned the software and hardware architecture from scratch to create a more efficient and mission-focused system. Despite facing a critical issue with the Internal Measurement Unit (IMU) just before the autonomous navigation mission, the team managed to replace it and reprogram the rover within 15 minutes, securing the 'Best Autonomous System' award.
Missouri University of Science and Technology won the competition, with Monash University of Australia placing second. UIU was the only Asian team in the top three. The team's achievement is a result of relentless effort and dedication, though their ultimate goal remains to become the world champion.
