Bangladesh's University Grants Commission (UGC) is shifting its focus from traditional degree-awarding institutions to becoming centers of skilled human resource development, emphasizing the importance of soft skills in the modern job market.
Comprehensive Soft Skills Development
During the central orientation programme for first-year undergraduate students at Islamic University, UGC Chairman Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed highlighted the need for a nationwide soft skills development programme. This initiative aims to equip students with digital literacy, communication skills, and critical thinking abilities, alongside their academic knowledge.
Digital Transformation in Higher Education
Dr. Mamun Ahmed announced plans for a digital transformation of all public universities, including uninterrupted Wi-Fi connectivity, smart classrooms, and eventually, fully digital campuses. This move is intended to ensure equal access to global knowledge and research facilities.
Mandatory Internships to Bridge Education and Employment
The UGC chairman also revealed plans to introduce mandatory internships, creating opportunities in both public and private sectors with financial support. These internships will provide students with practical workplace experience before graduation.
Dr. Mamun Ahmed emphasized the importance of hard work, discipline, and moral values for achieving success, urging students to prepare themselves as responsible citizens for the future.
Islamic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. AKM Matinur Rahman requested UGC support for infrastructure improvements, including a boundary wall, a permanent stadium, and an upgrade to the university's access road.
