Prof. Khayrul Islam has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). He succeeds Prof. A.M. Sarwaruddin Chowdhury, who has been relieved of his duties. Prof. Islam was previously the head of the Business Administration Department at SUST. In a separate development, Prof. Abdullah-Al-Mamun, a professor from the Japanese Studies Department at Dhaka University, has been appointed as a new member of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This follows the acceptance of Prof. Mohammad Tanjimuddin Khan's resignation from the UGC.
Details of the Appointments
The appointments were announced in two separate notifications by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education on Saturday. Prof. Islam's term as Vice-Chancellor will be four years from the date of joining or until his retirement, whichever is earlier. The President, as the Chancellor, retains the authority to cancel the appointment at any time if necessary. Prof. Mamun's appointment to the UGC is effective immediately.
