However, studying in Japan involves more than just university admission—students must follow multiple processes. According to the 'Study in Japan' portal run by the Japanese government, from confirming admission to registering housing in Japan, specific rules must be followed at each step.
Key Documents and Steps
One of the most important documents is the Certificate of Eligibility. This certificate proves that the student meets the immigration requirements for long-term study in Japan. According to government guidelines, the student or their representative in Japan can apply for the Certificate of Eligibility through the Regional Immigration Services Bureau. In most cases, the admitting institution acts as the representative in this application process.
Students going to Japan for study must also prove their financial capability. According to the 'Study in Japan' portal, students may need to submit bank statements, previous year's income certificates, and documents related to the source of funds. These documents can be in the student's name or their financial guardian's name.
Student Visa and Residence Card
After obtaining the Certificate of Eligibility, students can apply for a student visa at the Japanese embassy or consulate in their home country. International students staying in Japan for more than three months are given a residence card known as the 'Zairyū Card.' This card is usually issued during immigration clearance at major airports. Students entering through smaller airports receive a passport stamp and must later collect the card after completing local registration. Students must register their residential address at the local municipal office within 14 days of determining their address. Carrying this card is mandatory during their stay in Japan.
Foreigners residing in Japan are also given a 12-digit social security and tax identification number known as 'My Number.' This number is issued after local registration and is used for administrative tasks, banking services, and part-time job documentation.
Students wishing to visit Japan solely to take an entrance exam must apply for a Temporary Visitor Visa. In this case, they must show a test voucher issued by the institution where they will take the exam. Depending on nationality and visa type, temporary visitors can stay in Japan for 15, 30, or 90 days.
