The government has appointed a new Vice-Chancellor at Jamalpur University of Science and Technology after 23 days. Professor Mohammad Amir Hossain Bhuiyan, who joined as the Vice-Chancellor on May 14, has been relieved from his position. The new Vice-Chancellor is also named Mohammad Amir Hossain, a professor at Bangladesh Agricultural University.
An official notification from the Ministry of Education stated that the Chancellor and President have appointed the new Vice-Chancellor. The term of this appointment will be four years, but the President, as the Chancellor, can cancel it at any time if necessary. The Vice-Chancellor is required to be present on campus at all times.
The same notification also informed that Professor Mohammad Amir Hossain Bhuiyan has been relieved from his position as Vice-Chancellor and allowed to return to his original position. Sources from the Ministry of Education mentioned that there are serious allegations under investigation against Professor Mohammad Amir Hossain Bhuiyan.
After the new government took charge, changes in the Vice-Chancellor positions at various public universities began. As part of this, on May 14, the government changed the Vice-Chancellors at 11 public universities, including Jamalpur University of Science and Technology. Most of the Vice-Chancellors who were relieved had been appointed during the interim government.
On the same day, a professor was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, but the appointment was canceled shortly after. Prior to that, in March, the government appointed new Vice-Chancellors at seven universities: Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Jagannath University, Bangladesh Open University, Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, and Dhaka Central University. Additionally, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), which oversees higher education, was also changed.
Meanwhile, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Jahangirnagar University, M Mahfuzur Rahman, has been relieved from his position. He was appointed to this position in September 2024. Additionally, Professor Borhan Uddin of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Jahangirnagar University has been appointed as the Treasurer of the newly established Dhaka Central University.
