Chittagong University (CU) has initiated the construction of a new six-storey annex building for the Jamal Nazrul Islam Research Center of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (JNIRCMPS). The project, valued at Tk 9 crore, marks a significant expansion of the university's research facilities. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan inaugurated the construction by unveiling the foundation stone beside the existing research center. The project is financially supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Jamal Nazrul Islam Research Center, established in 1986 by renowned physicist and mathematician Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam, has not undergone major expansion in the past four decades. The new annex is part of a broader development master plan worth about Tk 40 crore for the 38,000-square-foot research center complex. The master plan includes an academic building, an auditorium, a plaza with a lily pond, and a parking area.

Project Director and CU Executive Engineer (Civil) Md. Ilias Chowdhury stated that the first two floors of the six-storey building are expected to be completed within a year, with the remaining floors dependent on future UGC funding. Construction began on July 9 and is scheduled for completion by July 9, 2027.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Al-Forkan emphasized the university's commitment to research, noting that the new facility will strengthen research activities and create greater academic opportunities for students. The expansion is expected to significantly contribute to the academic and research landscape of Bangladesh.
