Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman has directed the chairman and managing director of Sammilito Islami Bank PLC to take necessary measures to protect depositors' interests and resume normal banking operations at the earliest. The directives were given at a meeting with the bank's chairman, Kazi Shairul Hasan, and Managing Director Abedur Rahman Sikder at Bangladesh Bank this morning, according to a press release.

The Governor issued specific instructions on three key issues. Firstly, he instructed the bank authorities to clarify to all depositors that there will be no 'haircut' on their profits, addressing ongoing confusion among depositors. Secondly, the Governor noted that money is already being returned to depositors in line with the scheme announced on December 29, 2025. He further directed the bank to allow individual depositors to withdraw money from Al-Wadiah current accounts, Mudaraba savings accounts, and Mudaraba term deposits beyond the original scheme's provisions starting September 1. Finally, the Governor instructed the bank to take all necessary steps to resume normal banking activities as soon as possible.

Background and Context

Sammilito Islami Bank PLC, with a capital base of Tk 35,000 crore, has faced challenges that prompted the Bangladesh Bank to intervene. The bank's operations were disrupted, causing concern among depositors about their funds and profit returns. The Governor's directives aim to restore confidence and ensure that depositors' interests are safeguarded.

The 'haircut' issue refers to a reduction in the value of depositors' profits, which has been a point of confusion and anxiety. By clarifying that there will be no such reduction, the bank aims to alleviate depositors' fears. Additionally, allowing more flexible withdrawal options from various accounts is intended to provide relief to those in need of their funds.

Significance and Impact

These directives are crucial for stabilizing Sammilito Islami Bank's operations and maintaining public trust in the banking system. Ensuring that depositors can access their funds and profits without cuts is essential for the bank's recovery and for maintaining financial stability. The timely resumption of normal banking activities will also help the bank regain its footing and serve its customers effectively.
