In a significant development for Bangladesh's banking sector, Bangladesh Bank (BB) has concluded the administration of Social Islami Bank PLC, marking another milestone in the ongoing process of consolidating five Shariah-compliant banks under Sammilito Islami Bank PLC. This move follows the earlier withdrawal of administrators from Exim Bank on July 30, 2026.

Administrator Withdrawal Details

The officials who were overseeing Social Islami Bank, including Bangladesh Bank Additional Directors Abdus Samad, Mohammad Bazlul Karim, and Hammada Abdul Ati, along with Joint Director Rowshan Akter, have been withdrawn. This action aligns with the central bank's strategic plan to streamline operations and governance within the Shariah-compliant banking sector.

BB's Executive Director and spokesperson, Arif Hossain Khan, confirmed the withdrawal, emphasizing the bank's commitment to ensuring stability and efficiency in the financial sector. According to BB sources, the administrators of the remaining three banks—First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank, and Union Bank—are expected to be withdrawn gradually over the next two weeks.

Implications of the Consolidation

The consolidation of these five banks under Sammilito Islami Bank PLC is part of a broader effort to strengthen the Islamic banking sector in Bangladesh. By centralizing administration and management, the central bank aims to enhance oversight, improve operational efficiency, and ensure better compliance with Shariah principles.

This strategic move is also expected to bolster the financial stability and resilience of the Islamic banking sector, providing a more unified approach to managing assets, liabilities, and customer services. It reflects BB's dedication to modernizing the banking infrastructure in line with global standards.

Observers believe that this consolidation will lead to more robust banking practices, improved customer trust, and increased market competitiveness. As the process continues, stakeholders will be closely watching the impact on the broader financial landscape of Bangladesh.
