As the US Federal Reserve prepares for its second meeting under new chairman Kevin Warsh, market expectations are that policymakers will maintain the current interest rates. This decision comes amidst ongoing concerns over inflation, which has been exacerbated by recent geopolitical tensions involving the US and Iran.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is set to announce its decision on Wednesday, following two days of closed-door sessions. Most investors anticipate that the Fed will keep rates steady at 3.50-3.75 percent for the fifth consecutive meeting, according to CME's FedWatch tool.

US consumer inflation has eased slightly to 3.5 percent year-on-year but remains significantly above the Fed's long-term target of two percent. The recent escalation of hostilities between the US and Iran, along with threats from Yemen's Houthi rebels to blockade the Red Sea oil trading route, has driven energy prices higher, further complicating the inflation picture.

Fed Governor Chris Waller has indicated that the central bank may need to tighten monetary policy to prevent a repeat of the high inflation experienced in 2021-2022. However, with headline inflation showing a slight dip in June, analysts do not expect a rate hike at this meeting, though some dissenting voices may emerge.

Warsh, who has vowed to reduce the amount of forward guidance the Fed provides, has been largely silent on specific actions to combat inflation. However, other policymakers have expressed growing concern over persistent high prices and the potential need for near-term action.
