Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized the importance of merit-based promotions within the Bangladesh Army, advocating for a system that prioritizes professional competence, integrity, and leadership qualities over personal preferences or political considerations. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2026, Rahman outlined his vision for a modern and professional army, highlighting the need to move beyond traditional biases in promotions. He lauded the contributions of past leaders like Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and those who serve in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the significant role of the army in national security, internal law and order, disaster response, and civil administration assistance.

In his address, Rahman stressed that the highest importance should be given to merit, professional competence, integrity, moral character, leadership qualities, and discipline in promotions. He called for an approach that rises above personal liking and disliking or political considerations, ensuring that the most qualified individuals are promoted to leadership positions. This commitment to professionalism is seen as crucial for the modernization and effectiveness of the Bangladesh Army.
Historical and Contemporary Contributions
The Prime Minister recalled the contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in reorganizing and modernizing the Bangladesh Army. He also honored the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War, the war-wounded freedom fighters, and the members of the armed forces. Rahman paid deep respect to the army personnel who have embraced martyrdom while performing duties in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. He acknowledged the ongoing role of the army in safeguarding the country's independence and sovereignty, as well as its contributions to maintaining internal law and order, disaster response, and providing assistance to the civil administration.
