Tragedy Strikes: Newlywed Couple Drowns in Naogaon Canal

A newly married couple drowned while taking a bath in a canal in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon district.

A newly married couple drowned while taking a bath in a canal in Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon district this afternoon. The incident occurred at Kartikahar village under Adhaipur union of the upazila. The deceased were identified as Nur Islam, a resident of Meherpur district, and his wife Sumaiya Akter, a resident of Kartikahar village. The couple had been married for six months.

According to local residents and eyewitnesses, Nur Islam arrived at his in-laws' house with his wife on Saturday for a family visit. On Sunday afternoon, he went to bathe in a large canal near the house along with several others. At one stage, Nur Islam reportedly slipped beneath the water. Seeing him struggling, Sumaiya jumped into the canal in an attempt to rescue him. She also disappeared underwater.

Local people immediately launched a rescue operation and recovered the couple from the canal about 30 minutes later. They were taken unconscious to Badalgachhi Upazila Health Complex where the attending physician declared them dead. Officer-in-Charge of Badalgachhi Police Station Mohammad Ruhul Amin confirmed the matter.
