A court in Jamalpur has convicted Md Anowar Hossain for the murder of his wife Ismatara Khatun in 2012 and sentenced him to death. The judgment was delivered by Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1.
Background of the Case
Md Anowar Hossain, 28, son of Idris Ali from Sanandabari village in Dewanganj Upazila, married Ismatara Khatun, daughter of Abdul Rahim from Madarer Char Master Para in the same Upazila. During their marriage, Anowar demanded a dowry of Tk one lakh and subjected Ismatara to continuous torture.
The Crime
On December 11, 2012, Anowar strangulated Ismatara, who was a mother of a four-year-old daughter. He left her body at the home yard of his neighbor Hurmuj Ali, with whom he had previous enmity.

The following day, Md Majnu Miah, brother of the victim, filed a murder case against Anowar with Dewanganj Police Station. After examining six prosecution witnesses, medical reports, and other relevant documents, Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim found Anowar guilty and sentenced him to death in his absence.
