Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md. Safiqul Islam Khan has stated that implementing planned road designs and effective vehicle speed control measures would significantly enhance pedestrian safety on roads. He made these remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a road safety training workshop held at the DNCC auditorium.
Workshop Overview
The workshop was a collaborative effort between the DNCC and the World Resources Institute (WRI). It aimed to train over 50 engineers from the DNCC and officials from various transport and road authorities, including the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), and the Roads and Highways Department (RHD).
Administrator's Remarks
During his speech, the DNCC Administrator highlighted the need for coordinated measures to ensure road safety. He proposed that through strategic road design, safe pedestrian crossings could be ensured. Additionally, controlling excessive vehicle speed could be achieved by installing raised crossings before traffic signals and zebra crossings, along with speed breakers.
Prime Minister's Support
Md. Safiqul Islam Khan mentioned that the Prime Minister is highly supportive of road safety initiatives and the integrated development of the city. He assured that the Prime Minister would be updated on the ongoing activities in Dhaka under the DNCC and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).
Workshop Leadership
The day-long training workshop was chaired by BIGRS Bangladesh Coordinator Md Abdul Wadud. Other key attendees included DNCC Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Asaduzzaman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Syed Rakibul Hasan, and Additional Chief Engineer Khandakar Mahbub Alam.
Significance for Bangladesh
This initiative underscores the critical need for enhanced road safety measures in Dhaka, a city with high pedestrian traffic. By implementing these measures, the DNCC aims to reduce accidents and create a safer environment for all road users. The collaboration with international organizations like WRI and the support from the Prime Minister highlight the importance of this issue and the commitment to improving urban safety standards.
