The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) has approved the import of 75,000 tonnes of muriate of potash (MOP) fertilizer from Russia and Canada at an estimated cost of Tk 351.26 crore. This decision aims to ensure an uninterrupted supply of a key agricultural input.
Details of the Approval
The approvals were granted at the 29th meeting of the CCGP for 2026, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury. The fertilizer will be procured by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) under government-to-government arrangements.
Sources of Fertilizer
Under a proposal from the Ministry of Agriculture, the committee approved the import of 35,000 tonnes (±10 percent) of MOP fertilizer from Russia's JSC Foreign Economic Corporation (Prodintorg). The fertilizer will be purchased at a unit price of US$380 per metric tonne, involving an estimated expenditure of Tk 163.92 crore.
Additionally, the committee cleared another proposal for the procurement of 40,000 tonnes (±10 percent) of MOP fertilizer from the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC). This fertilizer will also be imported at a unit price of US$380 per tonne, with a total estimated cost of Tk 187.04 crore.
Significance for Agriculture
The import of 75,000 tonnes of MOP fertilizer is crucial for supporting agricultural production in Bangladesh. MOP is an essential nutrient for crop growth, and its stable supply during the cultivation season is vital for maintaining agricultural productivity.
Next Steps
The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will now proceed with the procurement process under the approved government-to-government arrangements. This will ensure that the required quantity of MOP fertilizer is imported in a timely manner to meet the country's growing demand.
