In the wake of recent flooding in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, Bangladesh is turning to the Netherlands for its renowned water management expertise to fortify the nation's long-term flood defense strategies. State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad emphasized the value of Dutch experience during an exclusive interview with BSS. 'The Netherlands has developed one of the world's most successful water management systems. Their experience is highly valuable for a riverine country like Bangladesh,' Azad stated.
The collaboration was a focal point at a recent seminar organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands, where Dutch Ambassador and water management experts shared insights with Bangladeshi stakeholders on flood control, drainage, and water conservation. Azad highlighted the government's commitment to incorporating Dutch methods into Bangladesh's long-term plans for a more resilient flood management system.
The government is intensifying its focus on sustainable water management and climate resilience to mitigate flood risks and enhance water resource management nationwide. In response to the current flood situation, the government has stockpiled approximately 1.3 million geo-bags for repairing flood-damaged embankments. Over 700,000 geo-bags have already been deployed, with the remainder held in reserve for immediate dispatch to affected areas.
Azad noted that the government is yet to receive a complete assessment of the flood damage but expects comprehensive reports from district administrations and field officials soon. In the meantime, all leave for officials and employees of the Water Resources Ministry has been canceled, and engineers are actively addressing waterlogging and embankment damage. The state minister assured that emergency repairs to major embankments are expected to be completed within the next 15 days.
The government is also committed to modernizing its flood control infrastructure, much of which was built during the 1960s and 1970s. Azad mentioned that the present government aims to strengthen international cooperation in this sector, building on the foundation laid by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman's 1977 agreement with the Netherlands on water management. The ministry has received its allocated budget for the current fiscal year, with assurances of additional funds if necessary.
