The United States has refunded approximately $100 billion in tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump's administration, according to recent court filings. This figure represents about 60% of the $166 billion collected under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The refunds were made to importers who had previously paid the duties. The Supreme Court ruled in February that Trump had overstepped his authority in imposing these tariffs, significantly limiting his ability to use them as leverage against allies and competitors.

A US Customs and Border Protection official revealed that as of July 31, around $128.68 billion in potential and certified refunds were processed, with about $100 billion already sent to the Treasury Department for disbursement. Despite the Supreme Court's decision, Trump's sector-specific tariffs remain in place, as they rely on different justifications. In response to the ruling, Trump has sought new ways to impose tariffs, leading to additional legal challenges.

The court's decision in February dealt a significant blow to Trump's use of tariffs as a tool for international negotiation. Since then, the administration has faced multiple court challenges in its attempts to reimpose tariffs on various trading partners. These refunds underscore the legal and economic complexities surrounding the use of tariffs in international trade.

For countries like Bangladesh, which relies heavily on exports to the US market, these tariff changes could have significant implications. The refund of tariffs may ease some economic pressure on Bangladeshi exporters, but ongoing tariff disputes continue to create uncertainty in global trade.
