A major fire erupted in the Fontainebleau Forest, approximately 60 kilometers southeast of Paris, causing significant disruptions and evacuations. The fire, described by officials as'very virulent' and of 'exceptional scale,' began late in the afternoon and had spread across 800 hectares by early Monday morning. The A6 highway, a major north-south artery, was partially closed due to the fire, and firefighting aircraft had to suspend operations at nightfall.
Firefighting Efforts and Evacuations
Around 15 homes in the nearby village of Vaudoue were evacuated, and firefighters were working to protect several other towns in the area. Olivier Compta, overseeing the firefighting operation, noted that without the firefighting planes, more villages would have been evacuated. Approximately 400 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames, which broke out ahead of the July 14 national holiday and during the first major summer holiday weekend.
Impact on Travel and Infrastructure
The fire has caused significant disruptions to travel in the region. Highways and the high-speed rail line leading to the southeast of the country experienced delays. The French rail company SNCF reported delays of up to six hours for trains arriving at or leaving from Paris's Gare de Lyon.
Climate Context and Heatwaves
The Paris region, along with large parts of France, is experiencing its third heatwave since May, increasing the risk of fires. The heatwaves have broken temperature records across Europe and are linked to climate change, according to the World Weather Attribution group of scientists. The extreme heat has also led to the shutdown of three nuclear power stations in France and the shortening of a Tour de France stage due to high temperatures.
Government Response and Future Concerns
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced plans to visit Fontainebleau on Monday. He noted that forest fires have already consumed 17,000 hectares this year, a figure expected to rise to 25,000 hectares—twice as much as the same period in 2025. The ongoing heatwave and fire situation highlight the urgent need for effective climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
