A 70-year-old woman, Lie Siu Luan, was sentenced to seven years in prison for leading a baby trafficking ring in Indonesia. Lie, who headed a group of 19 people accused of trafficking babies in Indonesia and Singapore, was found guilty of committing crimes for the purpose of exploitation. The sentence was lower than the 10-year demand from prosecutors. Lie admitted to sending at least 12 babies to Singapore. Another defendant, Astri Fitrinika, received a six-year and seven-month sentence. The syndicate was uncovered after a parent reported a baby kidnapping in West Java province. Police rescued several infants and discovered that some rejected babies were sold domestically.

Lie was found guilty of trafficking a baby to Singapore for adoption in 2022, earning around S$17,000. The syndicate's activities highlighted the problem of human trafficking in Indonesia, a nation with over 17,000 islands. In a separate case, at least 57 people were found caged on a palm oil plantation in North Sumatra province in 2022, illustrating the severity of human trafficking issues in the country.

Human trafficking remains a significant issue in Indonesia, with the sprawling nation's vast geography and numerous islands making it a challenging environment for law enforcement. The case of Lie Siu Luan and her syndicate underscores the need for continued vigilance and action against such criminal activities.
