Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has proposed the establishment of a UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network to promote systematic knowledge-sharing, innovation, and capacity-building among member states. Speaking at the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) in New York, Ahmed called for stronger international cooperation to address evolving global security challenges. He emphasized the need for a fundamental transformation in traditional policing due to the rapid advancement of technology and the transnational nature of criminal networks.

Proposed Network for Knowledge Sharing

To strengthen institutional learning among UN member states, Ahmed proposed the creation of the UN Police Knowledge and Innovation Network. This platform would serve as a hub for sharing best practices, technological expertise, and innovative policing solutions. The network aims to enhance the capabilities of police forces worldwide by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Focus on Climate Change and Security

Ahmed also urged greater international cooperation to confront climate change-related security risks. He proposed the introduction of an Annual Environment Policing Conference to enhance global preparedness and coordinated responses to emerging environmental security challenges. This initiative reflects the growing recognition of the intersection between climate change and security.

Bangladesh's Role in UN Peacekeeping

Highlighting Bangladesh's role as one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, the minister noted the country has modernized its Formed Police Units and significantly enhanced specialized policing capabilities. These include SWAT, bomb disposal, cybercrime investigation, forensic services, immigration policing, and intelligence-led policing. Bangladesh's contributions underscore its commitment to global peace and security.

Call for Future-Ready UN Police Force

Calling for a future-ready UN police force, Ahmed emphasized the need for the international community to work together to build a policing system that is adaptive, innovative, and committed to peace, security, and humanity. The two-day UNCOPS 2026 summit brought together police chiefs and senior policymakers from UN member states to discuss the future of UN policing, technological innovation, and international cooperation in addressing transnational security challenges.

Significance for Bangladesh

This call for global cooperation is significant for Bangladesh, which has a vested interest in maintaining international peace and security. As a major contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, Bangladesh stands to benefit from enhanced global policing capabilities and knowledge-sharing initiatives. The proposed network and conference could provide valuable platforms for Bangladeshi police forces to share their experiences and learn from others, ultimately improving their effectiveness in both domestic and international contexts.
