Viewers in Bangladesh encountered significant issues accessing FIFA World Cup matches on OTT platforms despite purchasing subscriptions. Multiple users reported being unable to log in or stream the matches, leading to widespread frustration. Social media was flooded with complaints from disappointed fans.
Three OTT platforms—iScreen, Bioscope Plus, and Toffy—had announced special 'World Cup packages' for 99 taka, in addition to regular subscriptions. However, the initial matches could not be viewed on any of these platforms, according to consumer reports.
Mohammad Isam, Bangladesh representative for Cricinfo, purchased subscriptions for two OTT platforms but could not log in to either. He expressed his disappointment on social media, stating that he eventually watched the match on a third-party app without any issues.
Consumers criticized the OTT platforms for their inadequate customer service and technical capabilities. One user commented that the platforms seemed more interested in marketing than ensuring a smooth viewing experience.
When contacted, the OTT platforms provided varying responses. Bioscope, operated by Grameenphone, attributed the issues to unexpected technical glitches and assured that the problem was being addressed. Toffy, from Banglalink, stated that their team was working closely with stakeholders to resolve the issues and improve platform performance. iScreen claimed that a large number of viewers had successfully enjoyed the matches.
The inability to stream the World Cup matches has forced many viewers to resort to unofficial third-party websites, highlighting the shortcomings of the local OTT services.
