Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu has lauded the collective spirit of his squad, emphasizing their unity as a crucial factor ahead of their World Cup last 16 clash against Brazil in Houston on Monday. Considered dark horses in the tournament, Japan finished second in their group behind the Netherlands with one win and two draws.
Strong Team Spirit
On the eve of the crucial knockout game, Moriyasu praised the attitude of his players. "All the players will do what they can for the team and contribute," he said. "The team is united and that feeling is getting even stronger now."
Injuries and Challenges
Japan will be without winger Takefusa Kubo, who suffered a knee injury in the 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. Despite this setback, Moriyasu remains optimistic about his team's chances.
Previous Encounters
Japan previously defeated Brazil 3-2 in a friendly match at home in October. However, Moriyasu acknowledges that Carlo Ancelotti's Brazil team will be a different and more motivated opponent in Houston. "It is a different team and they will be more motivated to play against us, they will be intent on beating us," he said.
Road Ahead
Japan has never advanced beyond the last 16 of the World Cup, while Brazil is aiming for a record-extending sixth title. Brazil will have had more time to recover, having finished their group stage a day before Japan. Despite this, Moriyasu remains confident. "We feel the match will be very intense," he added. "We have a chance and it will be tough... we will be at full force."
The winners of the match will face either Norway or the Ivory Coast in the next round. Four years ago, Japan stunned Germany and Spain in the group stage but lost on penalties to Croatia in the last 16. Brazil also lost to Croatia in the quarter-finals, also on penalties.
