In a stunning upset, Cameroon defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals, securing their place in the semi-finals. Myriam Nyadjou's 19th-minute free-kick was the decisive moment, marking her first goal of the tournament and giving Cameroon only their second win over Nigeria in 14 WAFCON meetings.
Nyadjou's Decisive Free-Kick
The 19-year-old striker's rising shot past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was a thing of beauty. Nyadjou's strike, her first of the tournament, soared into the top corner of the net, leaving Nnadozie with no chance. This goal not only silenced the Nigerian supporters but also propelled Cameroon into the semi-finals.
Nigeria, the 10-time WAFCON champions, pressed hard for an equalizer in the dying moments of the match but were repeatedly thwarted by Cameroon's goalkeeper Michaely Bihina, who made several crucial saves.
Nigeria's Missed Opportunities
Despite their dominance, Nigeria failed to capitalize on their chances. In the third minute of added time, Esther Okoronkwo nearly equalized, but her shot went wide of the far post. Nigeria's introduction of six-time African Women's Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala late in the game did not yield the desired result, as the Saudi-based striker was unable to influence the match.
Cameroon's victory sets up a semi-final showdown with hosts Morocco in Rabat. The win also booked their spot in the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil. As the final whistle blew, Cameroon's substitutes and coaches flooded the pitch to celebrate with the Indomitable Lionesses.
In the other semi-final, debutants Malawi will face three-time runners-up Ghana, with the winners advancing to meet Algeria.
