India's cricket team faces a significant setback ahead of their two-Test series in Sri Lanka, as skipper Shubman Gill has been forced to miss a warm-up match due to a finger injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during practice, necessitating his absence from the three-day game against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI.

KL Rahul will lead India in the warm-up match, which begins on Friday at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo. This comes as a precautionary measure, with the BCCI's medical team closely monitoring Gill's recovery. The first Test is scheduled to start on August 15 at Galle, followed by the second Test from August 23-27 in Colombo.

The upcoming series marks India's first in the World Test Championship since their 2-0 defeat to South Africa in November. Currently positioned fifth in the WTC standings, India will need to navigate their way through the series without their captain, whose presence is crucial for the team's performance. Sri Lanka, ranked sixth, will be eager to capitalize on India's potential vulnerability.

Gill's injury adds to the challenges for India, whose last series against Bangladesh concluded with a 2-0 victory. The team's performance in Sri Lanka will be closely watched, especially given their standing in the WTC and the competitive nature of the series.
