The government has announced plans to construct 10 sports villages across the country to promote sports at the grassroots level. State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque made the announcement during a Jatiya Sangsad session on July 9, 2026. The sports villages will be built in eight divisions, including Faridpur and Cumilla, during the current fiscal year.
Aim to Build a Drug-Free Society
The initiative aims to build a drug-free society by encouraging sports participation among the youth. The government has already decided to construct these villages to foster sports at the grassroots level.
Mini-Stadiums and Renovations
In addition to the sports villages, the government has built 125 mini-stadiums, which are currently being renovated. Another 201 mini-stadiums are under construction, with 40 nearing completion and expected to open soon. The construction of these stadiums will be done in consultation with local lawmakers.
FIFA World Cup Celebrations
The minister expressed sorrow over the deaths linked to the ongoing FIFA World Cup celebrations, which have reached 10 due to chaos. He urged people to enjoy the event calmly and avoid creating social disorder.
Professionalizing Sports
To professionalize sports, the government is providing sports allowances to national players. The regional phase of the 'Notun Kuri Sports' programme has been completed, and the national-level final is scheduled for July 27, with the Prime Minister expected to attend as the chief guest.
Future Plans
The online registration for the second edition of the 'Notun Kuri Sports' programme began on July 1, and the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the event in the first week of September. The government also plans to construct Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), the national sports institute, in Mymensingh and hilly areas. Currently located in Savar, just outside Dhaka, BKSP is the country's primary government-funded residential academy for discovering and training young athletic talent.
