Thibaut Courtois said he was proud of Belgium's fabled 'Golden Generation' as their final shot at winning a major title ended in a World Cup quarter-final defeat to Spain. Courtois, who watched from the bench, saw the careers of veteran teammates like Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku conclude at the SoFi Stadium.
A Legacy of Talent and Near Misses
Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois, 34, along with De Bruyne, 35, and Lukaku, 33, were part of a talented group of Belgian players that reached the pinnacle of FIFA's rankings multiple times over the past decade. Despite their individual brilliance, the team, which also included Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, and Marouane Fellaini, fell short in major tournaments, with their best performance being a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup.
Familiar Heartbreak in Qatar
Friday's 2-1 loss, which followed a blunder by substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens after Courtois came off injured, echoed past disappointments. Despite the defeat, Courtois insisted that Belgium's old guard could look back at their tournament record with pride, noting that they were often eliminated by eventual winners.
Pride in Performance
"In the big tournaments, almost always we have done well," Courtois said. "We're very proud of everything we did till now. Obviously we get a lot of criticism like 'The golden generation never won anything, and so on.' But we are Belgium. We're not England. We're not Spain. We're not France. We are a small country of not even 12 million people that in big tournaments is showing amazing things."
Looking to the Future
While several members of the team are well into their 30s, Courtois is confident that Belgium will continue to produce young talent. "We have great youth academies that are working well... there's young talent coming up, and the guys that are younger now will get stronger the next years. And I'm hoping that for the Euros or the next World Cup, we'll get stronger. I think we have the spirit."
Why This Matters
The end of Belgium's 'Golden Generation' marks a significant moment in football history. Despite not winning a major title, their consistent performances in big tournaments have left a lasting legacy. For Bangladesh, this story highlights the importance of perseverance and the impact of talented individuals on the global stage, even in the face of criticism and setbacks.
