Today, March 27, marks the observance of Lailatul Qadr, or Shab-e-Qadr, the Night of Decree. This night holds immense significance for Muslims, who spend it in prayer and devotion. Scholars believe it falls on any odd night after the 20th of Ramadan, though many consider it to be the night following the 26th. This year, it coincides with a Friday.
Lailatul Qadr is the night the Holy Quran was revealed. It is described in the Quran in Surah Al-Qadr. The term 'Shab-e-Qadr' is Persian, with 'Shab' meaning night and 'Qadr' meaning honor, dignity, virtue, potential, and fortune. Thus, it is known as the Night of Honor or the Night of Destiny. Its Arabic equivalent is Lailatul Qadr, the Honored Night.
On this night, the honor of the followers of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is increased, and the destiny of humanity is redefined. Therefore, it is considered extremely virtuous and magnificent for Muslims. The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged seeking refuge from all troubles by praying on this night.
The Quran states that the reward for worship on this night is greater than that of a thousand months of worship. Thus, Muslims in Bangladesh, like those worldwide, engage in extra prayers, Quran recitation, and dhikr to seek forgiveness for their sins and attain greater rewards. Many also visit graveyards to pray for the forgiveness of their deceased loved ones.
President Mohammed Sahabuddin and Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus have issued separate messages on the occasion of Lailatul Qadr. The Islamic Foundation has organized a discussion and prayer meeting at the National Mosque Baitul Mukarram, as it does every year. The Taraweeh prayers, which are performed during Ramadan, will conclude tonight.
