In an early morning operation, Dhaka police arrested seven individuals in the upscale Banani area for allegedly plotting a torch procession in support of the banned Awami League party. The arrests occurred following a tip-off about a gathering of around 100 to 120 people near Army Stadium, equipped with torches, intending to march from the Sainik Club area. Authorities swiftly intervened, leading to the apprehension of the seven suspects and the seizure of 70 torches, one banner, and 77 face masks.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed that the operation was executed by a team from the Banani Police Station around 12:20pm on the opposite side of Army Stadium on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Among those arrested were Md Arif, 19, Md Shakil Ahmed, 19, Ashik Ahmed Mostafa, 19, and four others who were minors. The remaining participants managed to escape the scene, according to the police statement.
The Awami League and its affiliated organizations have been under restrictions since the government imposed a ban on their activities. This recent crackdown underscores the authorities' determination to prevent any public gatherings in support of the banned political group. Legal proceedings are now underway against the seven detainees and the organizers of the thwarted procession.
