Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the government is dedicated to enhancing democratic institutions, revitalizing the economy, and improving the living standards of the people. Speaking at the Bengal Delta Conference 2026, organized by the Dhaka Institute of Research and Analytics (DAIRA), he emphasized the government's commitment to building an inclusive, democratic, and exploitation-free state.
The minister noted that Bangladesh is at a critical juncture, with movements for democracy and political change creating new opportunities. He acknowledged the sacrifices of martyrs and freedom fighters and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the 2024 movement. Fakhrul expressed optimism about Bangladesh's economic recovery, despite challenges from global conflicts and economic instability.
Government Initiatives
Mirza Fakhrul outlined several government initiatives aimed at restructuring the economy, increasing investment, generating employment, and strengthening the banking sector. He highlighted development programs for the rural economy and the importance of industrial development, agricultural advancement, and the creative economy. The recent budget, he said, includes measures to promote investment and industrialization.
Democratic Reforms and Regional Cooperation
On democratic reforms, the minister mentioned initiatives for constitutional reforms through consultations with political parties and the need for strong institutions to sustain democracy. He stressed the importance of regional cooperation and the engagement of international partners in Bangladesh's economic development. Fakhrul expressed hope that the people of Bangladesh would build a better, safer, and more dignified life through their courage, unity, and resilience.
