The National Standing Committee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) convened a meeting to review the implementation of the government's priority projects and discuss various political, organisational, and international issues. BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired the meeting held at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office on Saturday night.
Government Projects Reviewed
The committee reviewed the progress of several government priority programmes, including the Family Card, Farmer Card, canal excavation programme, and allowance schemes for religious leaders. The committee expressed satisfaction with the progress of these initiatives.
Election Manifesto and Party Activities
The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the party's election manifesto, highly appreciating Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's initiatives. The committee expressed hope that the manifesto's targets would be achieved within the stipulated timeframe. Additionally, the committee discussed elections to different tiers of local government and called upon party units across the country to strengthen their organisational activities.
International Relations and Diplomatic Achievements
The Standing Committee reviewed the results of the 2026 parliamentary election and requested Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan to prepare a comprehensive report on the matter. The meeting was informed about the agreements signed during the Prime Minister's recent visits to Malaysia and China. The committee appreciated the enhanced cooperation and development partnership with these countries, marking significant progress based on mutual respect.
Concerns and Future Actions
Expressing deep concern over the renewed conflict between Iran and the United States, the committee urged both countries to end hostilities and resolve their differences through dialogue. The committee also voiced concern over the growing drug problem in the country and urged the government to adopt more effective measures to combat the menace. To further strengthen organisational activities, the committee directed the party's central, associate, and affiliated bodies to become more active.
Condolences and Prayers
The meeting expressed profound grief at the deaths of former party treasurer, former minister, and former Munshiganj lawmaker Mizanur Rahman Sinha, and former chief whip, former minister, and former Brahmanbaria lawmaker Harun-or-Rashid. It prayed for the eternal peace of their departed souls and conveyed sympathy to their bereaved families. The committee also expressed concern over the illnesses of Standing Committee member and government adviser Mirza Abbas, and Standing Committee member, former ambassador and government adviser Nazrul Islam Khan, praying for their speedy recovery.
