The Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor demanding a fair investigation into the alleged embezzlement of medicines at the university Medical Centre. The student body is calling for exemplary punishment for those responsible and the disclosure of complete records of medicine procurement, storage, distribution, and use.
The memorandum, submitted to Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan, was signed by JCD JU unit Convener Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babor and Member Secretary Wasim Ahmed Anik. The student body emphasized that the medical centre, funded through students' tuition fees, state allocations, and public money, should be free from irregularities, corruption, or negligence.
The demand follows an inspection on July 21 by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (admin), which detected alleged discrepancies involving nearly 19,000 pieces of medicine. The JCD described the incident as a serious blow to the university's reputation, students' rights, and public confidence, attributing it to long-standing mismanagement, lack of accountability, and negligence.
In their memorandum, the JCD placed a five-point demand, including a neutral, transparent, and time-bound investigation with the publication of the probe report; disclosure of complete records of medicine management; exemplary punishment for those found responsible; introduction of a digital inventory system, regular audits, and effective monitoring; and ensuring transparency, accountability, and administrative reforms in the overall management of the medical centre.
