The government has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting all public procurement through the electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) system, aiming to improve efficiency, transparency, accountability, and the timely implementation of development projects. State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki made the announcement while addressing two stakeholder consultation workshops on enhancing the e-GP system, mandatory implementation of e-GP, and strengthening the capacity of the Bangladesh Public Procurement Authority (BPPA).
Commitment to Transparency and Efficiency
Saki emphasized that the timely execution of development projects remains one of the government's highest priorities. He stressed that an effective and fully integrated e-GP system is essential to ensuring transparency, accountability, and value for public money. "We want to implement mandatory e-GP for all government procurement in the country," the state minister said, adding that the system should be made more efficient, user-friendly, and responsive to the needs of stakeholders to accelerate development activities.
Stakeholder Consultations and Future Roadmap
BPPA Chief Executive Officer (Secretary) S M Mohiuddin Ahmed, who chaired the workshops, said the authority would continue stakeholder consultations across Dhaka and other regions to identify field-level challenges and develop practical solutions for further strengthening the e-GP system. The workshops brought together senior government officials, project directors, ICT experts, representatives from engineering universities, and leading technology organizations.
Participants were presented with a roadmap for the future development of Bangladesh's national e-GP system, outlining steps toward a fully integrated digital public procurement framework.
Importance of Project Planning and Preparation
Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) Secretary Sirajun Noor Chowdhury, speaking as a special guest, said that alongside a robust procurement system, better project planning and preparation are crucial to ensuring quality implementation and avoiding delays.
Why This Matters
The move towards mandatory e-GP is significant for Bangladesh as it aims to streamline public procurement processes, reduce corruption, and ensure that public funds are used efficiently. By making the e-GP system more efficient and user-friendly, the government hopes to accelerate development activities and improve the overall quality of project implementation. This initiative is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in public procurement, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Bangladesh.
